Last year, all-star Brad Bennett, a stalwart of the Oilers defence, made a life changing decision. He decided to see if he could make it in the competitive world of American football - in America. Oilers.org.au caught up with Brad before he left for the United States.

What college are you going to play for?

Santa Barbara City College. It's in Santa Barbara city, north of Los Angeles.

When did you decide you wanted to go to college?

About a year ago. A friend influenced my decision but I also decided I wanted to play sport at a higher level.

What made you choose Santa Barbara?

Definitely location, the academic quality is excellent, and the football is a major factor in me choosing to go to Santa Barbara; another Australian, Nathan D'Cunha, attended, he also influenced my decision.

How did you go about finding housing in Santa Barbara?

I got some help from some locals, they've been very friendly.

How did you find the transition from an idea to a reality?

It was a long process from the inception of my goal, I spent lots of hours making highlight tapes, chasing up paperwork, and organising my affairs. I had to apply to the college, showing them that I had enough funds and high enough academic standards to attend. Well, first thing's first, I got my highlight tape prepared, then I sent that to the college. Once I found out the coaches were keen, I decided to apply. After the application was accepted, I received my I-20 visa form, then I had to fly to Melbourne and get a visa, which was a very frustrating experience.
